Essential Eye Care Tips for Children During Malta’s Scorching Summer: A Guide by Maria Agius

Summertime in Malta is a season of bright sunshine, outdoor activities, and unfortunately, some potential hazards for our children’s eyes. With temperatures peaking at almost 40 degrees Celsius and the air filled with dust from construction works, it’s essential to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and health of our children’s vision. As an eye doctor, I’m here to share some crucial tips on how to care for and protect your children’s eyes during the Maltese summer.

1. Shielding from the Sun

The intense Maltese sun can be harsh on young eyes. Here are some steps to protect them:

  • Wear Sunglasses: Invest in good-quality sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection. Wrap-around styles are particularly effective in blocking peripheral sunlight.
  • Hats and Caps: Encourage your children to wear wide-brimmed hats or caps to provide additional shade and reduce exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Seek Shade: Whenever possible, keep your children in shaded areas, especially during peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.

2. Guarding Against Dust and Debris

Construction dust is ubiquitous in Malta during the summer, posing a risk to eye health.

  • Protective Eyewear: When playing outside, children should wear protective eyewear to shield their eyes from dust and debris. Sports goggles can be a great option.
  • Frequent Eye Washing: Encourage children to wash their eyes regularly with clean water to remove any dust particles. This can prevent irritation and potential infections.
  • Indoor Activities: On particularly dusty days, it might be best to engage children in indoor activities to limit their exposure.

3. Beach Safety

The beach is a favourite summer destination, but it comes with its own set of eye hazards, such as sand and saltwater.

  • Sand Protection: Teach children not to rub their eyes if they get sand in them. Instead, they should rinse their eyes with clean water immediately.
  • Swimming Goggles: Ensure your children wear swimming goggles to protect their eyes from saltwater and sand. Goggles also help prevent infections from bacteria found in seawater.
  • Hydration: Encourage frequent hydration to prevent dry eyes, which can be exacerbated by the hot, dry beach environment.

4. Managing Allergies

Summer can also bring about allergic reactions due to pollen and dust.

  • Antihistamines: Consult with a paediatrician about suitable antihistamines if your child suffers from eye allergies.
  • Cold Compresses: Applying cold compresses to the eyes can reduce itching and swelling.
  • Avoid Rubbing: Remind children not to rub their eyes, as this can worsen allergies and cause further irritation.

5. General Eye Health Tips

Maintaining overall eye health is crucial for preventing problems during summer and beyond.

  • Regular Check-Ups: Schedule regular eye examinations to monitor your child’s eye health and catch any issues early.
  • Healthy Diet: Ensure your child’s diet is rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in vitamins A, C, and E, which are beneficial for eye health.
  • Hydration: Keeping children well-hydrated helps maintain optimal eye moisture and health.

Conclusion

Summertime in Malta presents unique challenges for protecting children’s eyes. By taking these precautions, you can help ensure that your children enjoy a safe and healthy summer. Remember, if you notice any persistent eye issues or signs of discomfort, consult an eye doctor immediately.

Stay safe, and enjoy the beautiful Maltese summer!
